Rose Acindel: Champion of Equality and Peace in Warrap State

Rose Acindel, former Women’s Union representative for Warrap State, is a fearless peacebuilder and an unwavering advocate for women’s rights. As a trainer and leader in community initiatives, Rose is committed to dismantling cultural barriers that limit women and girls, especially in accessing education and leadership opportunities.

Her journey began at just 15, walking four hours daily to attend a rural school. Everything changed when she was selected as a local translator for Médecins Sans Frontières during obstetric procedures. Her intelligence and determination caught the attention of volunteer Sabine Kampmüller, who offered to sponsor her education in Kenya. Despite her father’s resistance, Rose boldly persuaded him and began her courageous journey—traveling through Kakuma Refugee Camp to Nairobi, where she completed her primary and secondary education.

Rose quickly emerged as a leader among her peers, advocating for girls’ education and taking part in church leadership training. She later earned diplomas in Human Resource Management, Public Administration, and Computer Studies—equipping her for a future of transformative impact.

Upon returning to South Sudan, Rose served as an Administrative Assistant with World Vision International in Tonj. In 2010, she was appointed CEO of the Tonj South Election Commission and later became a Gender Administrator in local government. In these roles, she trained women and community leaders, shaped policy, and pushed for women’s inclusion in leadership and development.

Rose has been a vital voice in high-level peace negotiations, championing constitutional reforms that protect and promote women’s rights. Her unwavering dedication to equality led her to found LAWANCI, an organization focused on empowering women and expanding girls’ access to education.

Driven by vision and courage, Rose Acindel continues to inspire a generation of South Sudanese women to rise, lead, and break every barrier.
